Learning outcomes: onomatopoeia, cultures around the world, ways to say hello, visual literacy
I am passionate about introducing children to the culture, lives and language of children around the world in an engaging way. I use my books Knock Knock, Beep Beep and All Dogs Bark to introduce children to up to 29 different countries and their cultures and languages – from Ethiopia to Tonga to Iceland and Mexico.
Using the books we explore:
-
The lives, language and culture of children around the world
-
How to say hello in each country
-
Around the world onomatopoeia – do you know that dogs in France bark Jappe Jappe Jappe, car horns in Guatemala make a Peep Peep sound and knocking on a door in India sounds like Thak Thak.
-
Fun and interactive story time – children join in reading the story
-
We explore visual literacy by using the illustrations to look at the lives of children in different countries such as - activities they do, clothes, buildings, landscapes, animals, weather and food
-
For older children the workshop can include a session to retell the story based on the illustrations
-
Optional craft activities for younger children including making dog puppets or door signs.

Testimonial
"Catherine had our P-2 students completely enthralled in each of her sessions. Her presentations left our students buzzing about the joy of reading, exploring literary devices and music. Catherine’s visit raised the profile of reading in our school, making story writing more real and inspiring future authors. Overall, we had an amazing day - great fun and good value."
